Fertilizer Introduction

Urea fertilizer is an affordable fertilizer that contains a ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Urea is produced naturally in animals and humans, but synthetic urea is made using anhydrous ammonia.

Nitrogen synthesizes proteins, nucleic acids and hormones to prevent leaf yellowing and maximize plant growth. Phosphorus energizes the plant’s metabolic chemical reactions. Potassium synthesizes proteins and enables other vital plant processes, which stimulates the growth of strong stems and roots and prevents leaf yellowing and dead spots.

Important Points:-

  • Most fertilisers have high nitrogen content. Hence they are called nitrogenous fertilisers
  • The two most common fertilisers are ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulphate.

Ammonia is NH; it is made by the Haber process with nitrogen from the air

  • The Haber process makes ammonia out of hydrogen and nitrogen.
  • The Haber process is a very important industrial process
  • NPK stands for nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium An NPK fertilizer provides those three nutrients in ratios particular to the plant being grown. A 5-10-5 fertilizer contains corresponding amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.
